Happy Filipino American History Month! I recently saw the wonderful, high-energy musical “Here Lies Love” on Broadway about former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos, an important, powerful, and complicated figure in Filipino history. Highly recommend. Well done to my cousin Lora Olaes who co-produced the show!
Speaking of history and historical roots, I also want to acknowledge the terrible tragedy in Israel this week. My deepest sympathies go out to all the innocent people who’ve been harmed, particularly children and the elderly.
I stand with Israel’s people, but we must also recognize the sanctity of life and human rights for all, including people in Gaza who have nothing to do with Hamas. Zoe Lister Jones shared some beautiful words on the fear, complexity, and tragedy of the current situation here and here.
